Case #3513

assault Assault

Case Description

Gierolamo Massaroli was assaulted while sitting and conversing inside the shop of Bettin Bonifacio by members of the Ruffoni family. The brothers Bartolomeo and Giovanni Battista Ruffoni along with some of their household doubled back after passing the shop and entered it. They proceeded to beat the victim with the butts of their firearms mainly striking his ribs. They also smashed the victim's own firearm.

Motive

Enmity - Massaroli was the nephew of Giorgio Fioravanti who held enmity with the Ruffoni family and had previously assaulted then with arquebus fire. Witnesses claimed that Massaroli had adjusted or in some manipulated his firearm as they passed the shop which alarmed one of the Ruffoni's servants who went back to seize it from Massaroli which led to others doubling back and the assault. The victim instead claimed that he was being targeted purely for the enmity between the groups and that he was consistent target of persecution on account of his support for his uncle.
