Case Description

Girolamo Ronchi and another officer were in the village of Carpi to execute a warrant against the debtors of the Campanile. While inside the Massaro's house they were accosted by Giovanni Barbarigo, a banished outlaw, and two unnamed compatriots. They demanded what the officers were doing in Carpi and immediately after Ronchi replied about the warrant they discharged four arquebus shots at the officers. Ronchi was wounded by multiple shots and died later while his companion survived. The outlaws proceeded to strip the two officers, while Ronchi was mortally wounded on the ground, of their weapons and equipment. They then stole their horses held by the innkeeper and fled to Ferrarese territory as alarm bells were wrung in the village.

Motive

Different rural officers had been previously sent to Carpi in search of the bandit Barbarigo to arrest him when news reached the court of his location. The night before the murder they had gone to the bandit's house, but could not find him. This incensed Barbarigo who sought to kill the accosted officers simply on the knowledge that they were public officials.
