Case #1879
Case Description
Andrea Crisofaleti, the tax collector for meat duties in Verona was shot in the upper right thigh by an arquebus shot, a wound which endangered his life. The ambush occurred on the bridge of the Public Customs Office at the Ponte Nuovo with the assailant sprining from the portico of a neighboring butcher's shop. The assailant then fled back through the portico thanks to the river's low water level allowing him to conceal his identity.
Motive
The victim refused to provide any information about potential assailants due to fear of the "overbearing and authoritative hand" which likely ordered the attack. Officials believed that the deed was part of larger nefarious attempts to avoid taxes and intimidate customs officials.
