Case #1794
Case Description
The Killers; including Alessandro da Bonanigo, Count Giustinian Giusti, Giulio Zanchi, and three others; ambushed the Courier of Mantua and his postilion. Both were shot from their horses with arquebus fire and then "horribly slaughtered with a multiplicity of wounds." They then stole all of the dispatches and letters carried by the victims.
Motive
Robbery or espionage; Alessandro claimed they committed the crime "for no other reason than plunder" when taken prisoner. There was suspicion that the assailants were acting in service of a foreign prince to intercept government documents and communications.
