Case Description

That Bartolomeo the Butcher, called "Red", Bartolomeo Gaginella, called "Maretta", Zuane Zenolin, Nicolò Chiusa, Ghirardo Sandri, Garbin, manager of the Mills; Francesco Zuffo; Giorio Giorij; Zuamaria Onico; Bartolomeo Grongo; Paulo Zuffo; Andrea, brother-in-law of Bartolomeo Grongo; Avanzieto Avanzi; and Bego Avanzi. Accused of having, on the evening of the 5th of July past gathered on purpose for an ambush, and in a gang; accompanied also by others, all summoned by the said Bartolomeo the butcher for the underwritten effect; armed with diverse sorts of weapons, also with arquebuses ; and with provision made beforehand of carts, victuals, and instruments [they went] to the place of the Garzaro, where by those of the town of Este was being constructed a sluice gate and having been found near to said sluice Gate, under some planks sleeping, three master masons and two laborers, [the accused] suddenly assaulted them with a volley of arquebus fire, from which the magnificent Antonio Piero Grande, one of the said master masons, was wounded and instantly killed; shouting 'Out, you fucking cuckolds!' the aforementioned also deploying bladed weapons against all the above-mentioned wounding several of them, and also the said Piero Grande, destroying part of the walls of the said sluice gate, breaking and carrying away with them many of the tools that had been used by the aforesaid workers.
