Case Description

That Ser Mattio Barbarigo, son of the late Ser Gierolamo, having already voluntarily presented himself and having been released by the same Exalted Council on the aforementioned day; That wishing to carry out his evil intent against the Noblewoman Petra Benedetti, his wife, while in the year 1609, in the month of June, he was serving as Provveditore of Asola, he gave the order to Zuan Maria Garzignol, his coachman, and to another person who for now remains unnamed, to drive her in the carriage and overturn it from the bridge into the Chiese River, so that she would be drowned in its waters. But although the carriage was indeed overturned by the coachman and plunged into the river, the intended effect did not follow, because she was rescued by people who rushed to the scene; That he in order to keep hidden this impious action, he had the aforesaid Coachman killed afterwards by a soldier of the fortress; And continuing nonetheless still in his evil intent, finally, on the 12th of July last past, around midday; After having contended with words with his said wife, shortly after lunch, he wounded her with a sharp pointed weapon with many wounds, chasing her out of the house into the public street; So that, having retreated into the house of the one [who sells/makes] terracotta tiles, there she fell, and died. He having immediately absented himself [fled] with a creature of his, and "La Nena"; Uttering, in his departing, words that denoted his preceding evil intent.
