Cesare and Giovanni Carlani are turning the wheel in the forge, when in walks Giovanni Borghi with a pruning hoook and bashes Cesare over the head; Cesare dies promptly

Motive

Cesare and Giovanni were enemies; one night during Lent (maybe Holy Week) they were involved in a scuffle over precedence (and maybe a knocked-down child?) at the church doors, and Cesare hit Giovanni with a stick and injured him in the head; the two groups made peace but Cesare was not involved in the paci
