Alfiere is going in to hear mass, and Pietro walks up behind him, puts an archibugio right to his back, and shoots him

Motive

a lawsuit between the families - Alfiere's wife was previously married to Michele del Grosso's brother Pietro, and her son by him wants to get his father's property back from Michele; Michele has spoken of his wish to kill Alfiere and Pellegrino del Grosso and offered to cows to whoever will do it; at issue is Pellegrino's inheritance
