takes place while robbing the house of Count Ettore Rizzini - the count and his household had gone to the countryside for a couple of weeks, when they returned they found it had been broken into and robbed (was left in the care of an old ma named Ambrogio Manfredola). Matteo was killed because he saw them leaving the porta galiera and wouldn't trade his horse for some stolen money
