after Giacomo had started a process against Michele for "kissing" (forcefully) his daughter Rosa, and refusing to allow Michele to marry her, Michele waylaid him on the side of the road, attempted to shoot him but it didn't fire, so he cut his throat and head, then reloaded the gun and shot him
