Case Description

Don Giacinto Paolini was assaulted in the street by Giovanni Batista and Virginio Sego and four of their henchmen. After Paolini respectfully yielded the street and doffed his hat the Sego brothers returned the greeting and Giovanni Battista stopped Paolini and seized him by the hair. Virginio then took an iron gauntlet and struck Paolini so hard in the face that he was knocked off his feet. The two brothers then mercilessly beat him on the ground with their gauntlets, kicks, and one even trampled Paolini by jumping on his chest. They also had their henchmen beat him with the hilts of their daggers. Paolini begged for his life and stumbled to his feet at which point he was thrown to the ground again into the mud and beaten more. With the victim beaten to the point he could barely stand the assailants said to him that "By God's presence, didn't we tell you so? This time it was only fists next time it will be pistol shots."

Motive

Paolini was managing the legal interest of Donna Caterina, the widow of Dr. Francesco Sego, in a lawsuit pending between her and the Sego brothers. During the attack they explicitly stated it was on account of the lawsuit and insulted Caterina's honor with obscene language.
